Performing Arts Department Chair & Choral Director

Maret School seeks a passion-filled, dynamic Choral and Music Teacher who will serve as our Performing Arts Department Chair.   The Performing Arts are an integral part of our K – 12 education.  Music is a requirement from Kindergarten through 9th grade.  The ideal candidate will be able to fulfill the roles outlines below:

Choral and Music Teacher

  • Holds a graduate degree in Music Education
  • Has taught a minimum of 5 years in an independent school
  • Demonstrates a mastery teaching choral music, vocal technique, music theory, show choir, and musical theatre
  • Arranges, Accompanies and plays Piano on an expert level
  • Displays excellent Rehearsal and Classroom Management Skills
  • Exhibits a deep passion for Music and Teaching
  • Is a trained master Conductor
  • Creates and leads an annual out-of-state, week-long choral trip
  • Shows great nthusiasm for working with students of all ages
Educational Leaders
  • Serve as members of the Curriculum Committee, the major decision-making group overseeing Maret’s educational program and the requirements
  • Demonstrate knowledge of new trends in education through attendance at conferences and seminars, membership in organizations, and subscriptions to appropriate journals
  • Work directly with division directors and Head of School to ensure the strength of department
  • Be a good team leader who models a good sense of humor, respect for others and an ability to balance change
Curriculum Leaders
  • Facilitate the establishment and then maintain a curriculum of clearly defined scope and sequence in grades 5-12 in some cases, and K-12 in others according to the objectives of the Strategic Plan
  • Set, with the help of the department and in keeping with the goals of the Curriculum Committee, the standards for departmental philosophy and for the development of new courses
  • Make sure that each part of the curriculum is age appropriate (in consultation with the division director) and assure that requisite skills are taught.
  • Forge change and avoid stagnation in the curriculum
  • Work with each member of the department to encourage and develop a rich curriculum
  • Counsel students about their course selections and schedules and departmental philosophy
  • Work with teachers on books and supplies needed for courses
  • Work with other department chairs in order to facilitate cooperation between programs
Faculty Advisors and Supervisors
  • Work with the Assistant Head on recruiting any new faculty members.  Hire with the Head of School, Assistant Head and appropriate division directors, a dedicated and professional group of life-long learners who show a passion for their subject matter, a respect for the school’s mission, and a responsibility for each student; develop job descriptions that take into account broader school needs (such as athletic coaching, advising, extra-curricular activities)
  • Model commitment and excitement about the teaching profession
  • Train teachers in the methods and content required for effective teaching

Maret School, Department Chairs

  • Hold regular department meetings
  • Have excellent collaboration, communication and management skills
  • Promote and expedite faculty development, by finding seminars, conferences and other avenues for professional development
  • Visit regularly each teacher’s classes, particularly those new to the profession or new to Maret
  • Allot teaching assignments yearly; find the optimum role for each teacher within the program, while keeping in mind overall school needs
  • Evaluate and guide faculty in their teaching; offer feedback from peers, division directors or parents where appropriate; keep the Head of School and Division Director informed of each teacher’s progress
  • Applaud teachers when their performance merits praise
  • In those rare cases where the fit is no longer good between the teacher and the school, work with the Head of School to deliver that message
